Regular maintenance extends the life of your air brake hose and prevents breakdowns. Here’s what to do:

Inspect air brake hoses weekly. Look for cracks, splits, or brittleness (common from UV rays or road chemicals). Check the fittings too—loose or rusted fittings cause leaks. Wipe the hose with a damp cloth to remove dirt; this helps you spot damage more easily.

Clean air brake hoses monthly to prevent chemical damage. Road salt, oil, and diesel can break down the hose’s rubber over time. Use mild soap and water to clean the hose—avoid harsh cleaners (they can eat away at the rubber).

Protect air brake hoses from friction. If the hose rubs against the vehicle’s frame or other parts, it will wear thin. Use hose clamps or protective sleeves to keep the hose in place and away from sharp edges.

Replace air brake hoses on schedule. Even well-maintained air brake hoses wear out—most last 3–5 years (or 300,000 miles for heavy use). Mark the installation date on the hose, and set a reminder to replace it before it fails. For older vehicles, check the hose more often (every 2 weeks instead of weekly).
